Unions across the world have responded to the AIDS epidemic by creating the Global Unions Programme on HIV/AIDS. They agreed to join forces in order to bring the combined strength of their mass organisations into the global struggle. On World AIDS Day 2003, the international trade union movement launched a global campaign on HIV/AIDS. In 2005 the campaign became a programme with a commitment to action over the longer term. Trade unions have an crucial role to play in educating workers about HIV/AIDS.
